15 People Still Missing After Tropical Cyclone Freddy-Induced Floods in Nsanje
15 people remain missing on Makhanga Island in Nsanje, Malawi, nearly two weeks after Tropical Cyclone Freddy-induced floods hit, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Malawi-District Commissioner for Nsanje, Dominic Mwandira, says 15 people who were missing in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Freddy-induced floods on Makhanga Island in the area of Senior Chief Mlolo are still missing almost two weeks after the disaster struck, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Mwandira made the announcement in an interview on Saturday, stating that attempts to search for the missing individuals have proved futile, raising fears that they have died.
The DC also disclosed that the communities at Makhanga Island recovered a body of a deceased person this week, but he was unsure if the deceased was among the missing 15.
Meanwhile, the China Railway 20 has made a donation of assorted goods worth K8 million Kwacha to help the flood survivors in the district.
"We are thankful to the various Non-Governmental Organizations-NGOs and wellwishers who are donating things," said Mwandira.
Head of Procumbent for CR 20, Li Zhuguo, said the donation was part of the company's social responsibility.
Nsanje has a total of 58,000 households that have been affected by the disaster, of which 44,000 households are living in various evacuation camps.
