2025 crippling Tonse Government

It seems we are already in another campaign mode, as MCP and UTM are trying to outsmart each other ahead of the 2025 election, writes Fletcher Chikwengwe

The past ten months under this Tonse Government have taught us one too many political lessons.

Principal of which is that a coalition government can simply be a combination of nuisance (or nyusensi, if you like).

Look, instead of all the nine political parties in Tonse Government coming together to help this country out of the economic and governance mess, there has been a lot of unnecessary fighting, finger-pointing and political vitriol among the partners, mainly Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM.

It seems we are already in another campaign mode, as MCP and UTM are trying to outsmart each other ahead of the 2025 election.

It goes without saying that Saulos Klaus Chilima, popularly known as SKC in political arena, is still eying the State House.

On the other hand, we have MCP, that sees itself in government beyond 2025.

This explains why there is an intensified fighting between the two camps.

The recent by-elections have simply exposed serious political rivalry between MCP and UTM.

For the two camps, it’s all about strategizing for 2025.

The 2025 factor is why MCP feels it should be in full charge of running the government and do all the maneuvering for the next election.

The same 2025 factor is forcing UTM to start picking even petty fights against MCP.

Most of such fights are a product of frustration, anger and a fierce attempt to discredit and make MCP unpopular.

It is like UTM has already noted Chakwera is not paving way for SKC in 2025.

Interestingly, President Lazarus Chakwera of MCP and Saulos Chilima of UTM have all along been down-playing the wrangles between their camps.

However, Chilima recently in Karonga went public on the wrangles and reminded the two camps on the need to remain united, as was the case on 23rd June, when the fresh presidential polls were held.

Now, Chilima is one kind of politician who does not exercise silence on pressing issues forever and his remarks in Karonga.
