It's 23 June
As Winston Mwale reports, after so much pushing and shoving, and obvious uncertainty on the date of the fresh presidential elections, MEC now says will gazette June 23 as elections date
After so much pushing and shoving, and obvious uncertainty on the date of the fresh presidential elections, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) now says it will gazette June 23 2020 as the date for the fresh polls.
This comes hours after the opposition shot down a government-spondored bill to amend the Constitution, that many think was only meant to torpedo the 50+1.
In a statement signed by MEC Chairperson Chifundo Kachale, the electoral body says the commission decided to publish the date after receiving communication from the Clerk of Parliament that the House set June 23 as the date for the fresh election.
"The commission is seeking to engage directly with all contesting candidates to appraise them of the anticipated challenges and to explore reasonable mitigating measures to ensure delivery of a credible, free and fair election,” reads part of the statement.
