65-year-old Malawi grandmother cares for 10 orphans on her own, appeals for public support

Maria's story came to light after she tragically lost all of her own children, leaving her with the burden of being the sole breadwinner and caregiver for the ten orphans, including a three-month-old.

Malawi: In Malawi, many grandparents are taking on the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren due to unforeseen circumstances such as poverty and the irresponsibility of their own children, writes Peter Chilongo.

This is the case with 65-year-old Maria Mero, who is currently caring for ten orphans on her own in Mangochi Chalenga village, under the Traditional Authority Chilipa.

Maria's story came to light after she tragically lost all of her own children, leaving her with the burden of being the sole breadwinner and caregiver for the ten orphans, including a three-month-old baby.

In response to this dire situation, the Together We Can (TOWECA) Foundation is appealing to the public for support.

The organization's Executive Director, Owen Ganonga, is calling on individuals and organizations to join forces and make a difference for Maria and her family.

He states that the family is facing significant challenges and does not have a sustainable way of raising funds for their daily needs, as they were previously supported by Maria's deceased children.

The Group Village Headman of the area has also emphasized the critical situation of the family, especially regarding the safety of the three-month-old baby, and urged both government and non-government organizations to intervene and save the lives of the family.

Those who wish to donate or help the family can contact Owen Ganonga at +265 995 22 52 60 for more information.
