AFORD President Plans to Assist Dry Spell-Affected Farmers in Karonga District

Malawi-Enoch Chihana, President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), has announced plans to visit drought-affected farmers in Karonga district to assess the situation and offer assistance, including fertilizer for winter cropping, writes Wezzie Mwangonde.

Chihana expressed concern over the dry spells' impact on farmers, leading to hunger, and emphasized the need for prompt solutions.

He stated that an assessment in collaboration with Area Development Committee members, traditional leaders, and other relevant stakeholders would help identify beneficiaries, particularly orphans, the elderly, people with disabilities, and vulnerable groups.

Chihana added that the assistance would include cassava cuttings and sweet potato tubers.

"Karonga district is my home, and I have heard about the challenges facing farmers. I need to offer solutions to the dry spells," he said.

The AFORD leader further noted that the donation would help farmers between May and September this year during irrigation farming.

Samuel Mvula, Chairperson of the Malema 1 Radio Listening Club, called on well-wishers to provide farming inputs such as seeds, cassava cuttings, and sweet potato tubers for irrigation farming.

He added that if farmers could receive treadle pumps, they would produce high yields.

Over 10,000 hectares of crops have been affected by the dry spell in Karonga district.
