African Spelling Bee Competition Returns After Three-Year COVID-19 Hiatus

Malawi: The African Spelling Bee Competition is back in action after a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, writes Comfort Bulangete.

A total of eight African countries are participating in the competition, which is currently underway in the city of Blantyre, Malawi.

According to Lewis Mbaula, President of the Malawi National Spelling Bee, the knockout show for the competition will take place on December 9, 2022.

Mbaula told AfricaBrief that despite facing some challenges during the competition, they believe that the spelling bee competition has helped a lot of children, citing a child who earned a PhD at the age of 22, as he was among those who did well in the spelling bee competition.

Secretary for Education, in the Ministry of Education, Chikondano Mussa is the guest of honour at this year's competition.

The event is being sponsored by organizations such as World Vision Malawi and Old Mutual.

The African Spelling Bee Competition's grand finale will take place in Blantyre.
