AGRICULTURE SUPPORT PROMISING FARMERS FOOD SECURITY

Katula Agricultural Cooperatives situated at Enukweni in Mzimba District have been assisted to control rainwater from washing away farm crops at fields located in hilly areas during this rainy season.

MALAWI: Katula Agricultural Cooperatives situated at Enukweni in Mzimba District have been assisted to control rainwater from washing away farm crops at fields located in hilly areas during this rainy season.

Action for Sustainable Development Project Coordinator Chimwemwe Chirambo said the development is in place after assessing the damages to field crops that were caused by flooding in the area.

She said this on Tuesday during Vetivar grass planting exercise to curb the problem.

“Most of the fields here at Enukweni are located near hilly areas such that it becomes difficult to control rainwater from eroding the essential soils for the growth of crops. As a solution to this problem, ASUD has supported these farmers with Vetiver grass to control soil erosion,’’ said Chirambo.

Kawulumani Agricultural Corporative Chairperson Dorothy Kaonga expressed gratitude towards the development. She further said that the ASUD project has come at the right time, bailing them out from problems facing their fields due to this rainy season.

Kaonga said, “With this project in place, we are planting more Vertiver grass in boundaries and gullies created by running water. As such, we anticipate harvesting more since farm crops will be safe from being washed away by rainwater.”

Director for ASUD, Mr. Thomas Ngwira, promised the farmers to continue supporting agricultural initiatives in Mzimba district as one way of complementing government efforts in creating sustainable food secured communities.

Action for Sustainable Development is a non-profit making organization working to respond to the current needs of Malawian citizens to enable them to become self-sustaining socially and economically.
