Malawi-Airtel Malawi Plc, on March 22, 2023, donated K150 million to support Cyclone Freddy survivors in the country, writes Bridget Mwanoka.

Airtel Malawi Plc Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, announced that K50 million of the donation will support the purchase of relief items through the Malawi Red Cross Society.

The remaining K100 million will be used to provide free talk time minutes to over 600,000 Airtel subscribers from the cyclone-affected areas.

According to Kamoto, Airtel Malawi Plc is committed to providing support to those in need during this difficult time.

In addition to the donation, Airtel Malawi Plc will provide five free talk time minutes per day for two days (totalling 10 minutes per person) to its subscribers in the affected areas.

Airtel used data from DODMA to map the affected areas to their sites, and subscribers using those sites will receive the free minutes.

The targeted customers will receive notifications via SMS.

McBain Kanongodza, Secretary General of Malawi Red Cross, expressed his appreciation for the support received from Airtel Malawi Plc and other stakeholders.

Kanongodza explained that part of the donation will be used to purchase food, which will be delivered to selected camps.

He further added that the K100 million in free talking time will ease communication by restoring family links for the affected population.
