British government touts security for people living with albinism in Mangochi

MALAWI: In a bid to strengthen and revamp security amongst people living with albinism in Mangochi District, Deputy British High Commissioner, David Pert, has donated security equipment to 14 Community Policing Forums under Senior Chief Mponda.

During the handover ceremony that took place at Mangochi Multi-purpose Hall, The Deputy High Commissioner reiterated the need for stakeholders' cooperation to end challenges facing people with albinism in the Lake Shore District.

Said David Pert, “The fight against this gross violation of human rights calls for a concerned multi-stakeholder approach. The British Government must join hands with the community to ensure their work is unproblematic and achieves the desired goal.”

In his remarks, Commissioner for Eastern Region Happy Mkandawire commended the donation, saying it will help in mitigating challenges facing the Community Policing Forums.

Mkandawire said, “As much as the region appreciates the reduction in such cases, the CP structures which act as watchdogs in the villages have several challenges and the donation will greatly ease their work.”

Speaking on the same, the Senior Chief Mponda commended the British government through Mangochi police for considering his area since it will empower, motivate and strengthen the good coordination between the communities and police.

The British Government has donated equipment such as reflecting jackets, touches, and whistles to the Community Policing Forums to ease the challenges encountered when discharging their duties.

The District Commissioner Dr. Raphael Piringu, Mangochi Police Officer-In-Charge Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Timothy Phiri, and Chief Executive Officer for Mangochi Municipal Council Abubakar Nkhoma are some of the notable top officials who were present at the function.

Records are showing that from January 2021 Mangochi Police registered one case of Saidi Daiton a person with albinism who was brutally killed on 27 January 2021 and police successfully apprehended 5 suspects and recovered the victim's body parts.
