The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says will close the campaign period for the forthcoming by-elections at 6.00 AM on Sunday 24 October 2021.

MEC Chairperson Dr.Chifundo Kachale disclosed this in a press statement issued Friday.

The statement reads, in part, “The Malawi Electoral Commission reminds all candidates, political parties, media houses, and the general public that the campaign for the 26th October by-elections ends on Sunday, 24th October 2021 at 6.00 AM.”

The Commission has further called upon faith leaders in the country to ensure that their worship services are not used for campaign purposes during the voting period.

The statement further reads: “Leaders of various faith groups should be on guard to ensure that their worship services are not used for campaign purposes. The clergy is also advised to avoid projecting or canvassing for candidates during services of worship.”

Among the prohibited things during the campaign closure period include playing any campaign messages and songs after the end of the official campaign period.

Meanwhile, MEC is challenging all the contesting candidates, political parties, and their followers to maintain peace and order during this campaign period.

22 candidates are battling for a parliamentary seat in the forthcoming October 26 by-elections in Nkhotakota North East, Mzimba East, and Dedza Central East constituencies.
