Francisco Mwangupiri took the first position in the rated section with 6 scores, followed by Maxwell Kamwendo and Jonathan Ibrahim both in the second position with 5 scores each. Stanley Mpinganjira, Stanley Biasi, James Kamowa, and Gift Howahowa took the third position with 4.5 scores each.
In the non-rated section, Brian Trapence took the first position with 7 scores, followed by innocent Tikiwa in the second position with 6 scores. Aaron Mwafulirwa, Amos Mahonga, Benjamin Chinungu, Roy Duwe and Andrew Kaliba ended on third position with 5 scores each.
Caroline Trapence emerged as the best female player in the non-rated section.
Commenting on her performance, Caroline said her play wasn’t good since she was occupied with her studies.
“I had no time for practice,” she said. “The event was well organized and she loved how players, even amateurs respected the rules of the game despite being their first time to play at a tournament.”
Among the players that attended the tournament were junior players, Fortunate Mpinganjira, Emmanuel Mpanang’ombe, and Oliha Ndalama.
Gift Howahowa, General Secretary for the Southern Region Chess League, expressed gratitude towards the sponsors.
He also said that chess is not just a game, but it is also for critical thinking decision-making, problem-solving as well as networking, through which the church can evangelize.
Pastor Beatrice of Raised for a Purpose Ministries said that they hope to sponsor chess again in the future.
