Chinese Government Commits to Supporting Security Improvement in Malawi

LILONGWE, MALAWI - The Chinese Government has expressed its commitment to supporting the improvement of security in Malawi during a meeting between the Chinese ambassador to Malawi, Lin Hong Yang, and the Minister of Homeland Security, Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma, on Tuesday at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, writes Brenard Mwanza.

"The diplomatic relationship between China and Malawi is very good, so today I visited the Minister of Homeland Security to exchange views on how best we can help the people of the two nations, especially in the field of security," said Ambassador Yang.

Minister Ng'oma thanked the Chinese government for the support rendered to the country through his ministry and highlighted some of the key commitments made by the Chinese government.

"Among the key commitments that the Chinese government has made are the provision of motorcycles and patrol boats for immigration and police, the provision of gadgets for automated revenue collection systems for road traffic, and technical expertise for mega-farms run by the Malawi prison service in order to ensure the sustainability of the initiative," said Minister Ng'oma.

Minister Ng'oma also mentioned that the two parties discussed the possibility of prisoner exchange, where prisoners can be allowed to finish their jail term in their home country, similar to Malawi's existing arrangements with Zambia and other neighbouring countries.

Malawi and China established diplomatic relations in 2007 and have since maintained a strong bilateral relationship.

The Chinese government's commitment to supporting security improvement in Malawi further strengthens the ties between the two nations and is expected to contribute to the enhancement of security measures in the country.
