Cholera outbreak in Malawi claims 1,080 lives, over 33,000 affected
All districts in the country have recorded cases and fatalities since the first case was reported in March 2022.
Malawi: At least 1,080 people have died from the cholera outbreak in Malawi since it broke out in March 2022, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health, writes Gloria Masanza-Kanyang’wa.
Over 33,000 people have been affected by the outbreak, with over 30,000 recovering from the disease.
The Ministry reported that in the last 24 hours, 15 people have died from the disease, with 602 new cases bringing the total number of fatalities to 1,080.
Lilongwe has recorded the newest cases with 226, followed by Mangochi with 96.
Other cases have been reported in Blantyre, Balaka, Machinga, Chiradzulu, Salima, Dowa, Mulanje, Thyolo, Neno and Chikwawa among other districts.
The Ministry has urged those affected to immediately seek medical attention and take an oral rehydration solution (ORS), a first aid solution.
