CHREAA requests President Chakwera to pardon 19-year-old boy Mzuzu inmate
Patrick Mwafulirwa, who sat for the 2020 Malawi School Certificate of Education Examinations and passed with 17 points, was arrested for defilement charges in 2018.
Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance has written President Lazarus Chakwera asking him to pardon a 19-year inmate Patrick Mwafuliwra at the Mzuzu prison so that he gets a chance to pursue his education at Mzuzu University.
This was after the young offender was selected to pursue his studies in Bachelor of Social Science in Nursing and m\Midwifery at Mzuni.
Patrick Mwafulirwa, who sat for the 2020 Malawi School Certificate of Education Examinations and passed with 17 points, was arrested for defilement charges in 2018.
Center for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance Executive Director Victor Mhango said that it is true that their organization wrote a letter to the president to pardon Patrick but refused to disclose some matters addressed in the letter.
Mr. Mhango said that the presidential spokesperson Anthony Kasunda assured them that the letter was received by the president’s office of which had been referred to the ministry of justice for action.
Patrick was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for the offence of defilement, and he has remained with 19 months to complete his sentence.
