Consortium of Organizations Provides Relief to Cyclone Freddy Victims in Southern Region

CHIKWAWA, Malawi - A consortium of three local and international organizations expressed satisfaction that their relief items are reaching the intended beneficiaries affected by tropical cyclone Freddy in the southern region, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Muhammad Choonara, Director for An Nasihah Trust Malawi, disclosed this on Easter Sunday at the John Evacuation Centre in the area of Traditional Authority Ngowe in Chikwawa.

"We have been on the ground assisting the affected victims since the start of tropical cyclone Freddy," Choonara said.

"It is worrisome that people have lost their loved ones, properties, and crops. It is our sincere wish to reach out to as many people as possible."

The trio of organizations donated assorted food and non-food items to over 1,500 people at the camp.

Chikwawa South Parliamentarian, Illias Abudal Karim, hailed the three groups for coming together to assist the communities in his constituency.

He observed that the affected people at John Evacuation Camp had not received any aid since the occurrence of the cyclone.

"This is their first time receiving relief items," Karim said.

One beneficiary, Zione Trusida, expressed gratitude for the support that came at a time when they had no food for several days.

"I have something to cook today to feed my children," Trusida said.
