Cracks, camps have potential to destroy DPP-Chimulirenji

MALAWI: Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) National Campaign Director Everton Chimulirenji has urged party members to end the camps that have emerged in order for the party to reclaim its former glory.

Chimulirenji, who was only vice president for 9 months [ which the courts quashed], spoke in Balaka at a rally organised by the party's vice president for the eastern region, Bright Msaka.

According to Chimulirenji, the DPP's cracks and camps have the potential to destroy the once-powerful party.

“The DPP is a powerful party, but what is happening with some members supporting other members rather than rallying behind the current leadership will end up destroying it," Chimulirenji said.

His remarks are in reference to the camps that have emerged within the DPP's top leadership, with some supporting DPP vice president for the South Kondwani Nankhumwa, and others rallying support for former Reserve Bank governor Dalitso Kabambe, and Msaka being pushed as a possible presidential candidate.

Former first lady Gertrude Mutharika also attended the rally as a guest of honour, prompting Facebook followers to wonder if she holds any position in the party aside from being the former president's wife.

Other rally speakers promoted the idea of former President Peter Mutharika running for President again in the 2025 general elections.
