Death Toll Rises to 190 as Tropical Cyclone Freddy Causes Widespread Damage in Malawi
The death toll from the devastating Tropical Cyclone Freddy (TCF) has risen to 190, with 584 injured and 37 reported missing, writes Winston Mwale.
Malawi-The death toll from the devastating Tropical Cyclone Freddy (TCF) has risen to 190, with 584 injured and 37 reported missing, according to fresh preliminary reports received by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi.
The department has also received rapid assessment reports on damages caused by the cyclone, including flooding, mudslides, and strong winds, from 12 affected councils.
Approximately 58,946 people have been affected, out of which 19,371 people have been displaced and are currently accommodated in 57 camps.
DoDMA says it, along with humanitarian partners and councils, is facilitating the provision of relief assistance to affected households, and search and rescue operations are underway led by the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, the Department of Marine, the Malawi Red Cross Society, and communities.
The department says it has dispatched relief items for use by the displaced and affected communities, and the general public will be informed of any further developments related to the effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
