DPP Kayuni fired for "using public office for personal gain" in arrest of Chizuma

LILONGWE, MALAWI - In a surprise move, President Lazarus Chakwera announced the firing of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr Steven Kayuni, during a national address on January 18, 2023, write Winston Mwale and Tionge Hara.

The decision was made following the findings and recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry established to investigate the arrest of Martha Chizuma, the Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

President Chakwera has maintained Chizuma in her position and has hired Masauko Chamkaka as the new DPP.

According to the President, Kayuni was found to have allegedly used his public office for personal gain during the arrest of Chizuma.

The President also addressed concerns regarding the involvement of Cabinet members or officials appointed by him in the arrest of Chizuma.

The report of the Commission of Inquiry found no evidence of involvement by any Cabinet members or officials appointed by the President.

Furthermore, President Chakwera urged the public to come forward with any evidence of government official interference in the operation of the commission of inquiry into Chizuma's case.

He also appealed to Malawians to put an end to unnecessary fights, strive for unity, and resolve issues amicably without involving social media.

This announcement is likely to have significant political ramifications, as the Director of Public Prosecutions is a key figure in the country's judicial system.

The President's decision to remove Dr Kayuni from his position, based on the findings of the independent commission, is being seen as a strong stance against corruption and abuse of power.
