DPP Kayuni's charges against Chizuma dropped: Justice Minister

Malawi: It’s now official: Following a backlash over whether the government was correct to withdraw charges against Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo says that the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni was the one who did so.

On Tuesday, AfricaBrief reported that Kayuni had complained to police about some of the contents of a leaked January 2022 audio.

Minister Mvalo, on the other hand, told Parliament that the government had unconditionally released Ms Chizuma and that all charges had been dropped.

Others argued that because it was Kayuni who filed the complaint, he was the right person to withdraw the charges.

Mvali clarified to local media on Thursday that the charges against Chizuma were withdrawn by the suspended DPP.

He also stated that no written proof of withdrawal was required.

Malawi is expected to join the rest of the world in commemorating Anti-Corruption Day on Friday, with the celebration in Kasungu led by ACB Director Chizuma.

It is unknown whether Ms Chizuma will attend the events.
