Five injured by "grenade" at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa

Malawi: Five people have been injured in what is suspected to be a grenade explosion at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa district, central Malawi, writes Madalitso Kantembe.

According to Dowa Police Spokesperson Gladson M'bumpha, police arrested Rwandan, Umoton John Phiri, 42, on suspicion of being involved in the attack that occurred on Wednesday.

"It is reported that one of the victims, a Burundian Community Leader Butoyi Fedeli, aged 54, and his secretary Bruno Ndaishme were outside his office at Dzaleka Main Market around 7 pm when Fideli claims he saw a person lighting matches before throwing an unknown object to them, which he suspects was the grenade," he said.

Furthermore, M'bumpha stated that, according to the facts gathered by the police, the object exploded, causing some cuts on Fideli and Ndaishme's legs and backs. and were both rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Aside from the two, three other people, including an 11-year-old child, were injured and are being treated at Dowa District Hospital.

Meanwhile, the suspect will be taken to court to answer grievous harm charges.
