Five missing in Nsanje after their canoe capsized on Shire River
According to reports, on that date, 16 people from Lundu and Chingwe Villages crossed the Shire River in a canoe operated by Mabvuto Billy, 22, to harvest potatoes on the other side of the river.
Malawi: Five people are missing in Nsanje district after their canoe capsized into Shire River on their way back from the farms on December 7, 2022, according to Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, Public Relations Officer at Nsanje Police Station.
According to reports, on that date, 16 people from Lundu and Chingwe Villages crossed the Shire River in a canoe operated by Mabvuto Billy, 22, to harvest potatoes on the other side of the river.
Around 1100 hours, they were sailing back in the same canoe when it capsized and all of the passengers fell into the water. Fortunately, 11 people were rescued, while five perished in the water and went missing.
The incident was reported to Nsanje Police Station, and officers responded to the scene.
Meanwhile, efforts are being made to find them.
