MALAWI: President Lazarus Chakwera says his administration's efforts to fix the country's "broken and dysfunctional system" have faced fierce resistance from those who benefit from the status quo.

"One effect of this fierce resistance against our efforts to fix state systems has been the delaying and disrupting of our programmes, triggering short-term pressures that make some people lose sight of the great strides we are making," said the Malawi leader as he presented his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on the occasion of the state opening of the 5th meeting in the 49th session of parliament and the 2022/2023 budget meeting.

Chakwera: I delivered the 2022 State of the Nation address to Parliament at the opening of the 5th meeting in the 49th Session of Parliament and the 2022/2023 Budget Meeting. The address - which I titled “Fixing The Systems to Deliver Long-Term Priorities and Diffuse Short-Term Pressures” - highlighted numerous anomalies in the state systems that have governed our institutions for decades and how my administration is rectifying these using consistent systemic reforms.Systemic failure is a social, political and economic malaise that has impeded national development in all sectors of human undertaking.I, therefore, reminded fellow citizens that all we need to do to translate our national treasures into national transformation is fix our broken systems. We must collectively supervise and reorient our systems so that they align with our dream of becoming a more prosperous, inclusively wealthy and self-reliant middle-income economy by 2063.In the short term, my administration will continue implementing policies and programmes that will accelerate the attainment of food security and the creation of jobs and wealth.
