Flood Survivors in Nsanje Lalanje Lack Access to Water, Sanitation

Flood victims at Bangula Evacuation Centre in Nsanje have expressed concerns over the lack of water and sanitation facilities at the camp, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Nsanje, Malawi-Flood victims at Bangula Evacuation Centre in Nsanje have expressed concerns over the lack of water and sanitation facilities at the camp, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Vera Maliko, one of the survivors, highlighted that the absence of water was negatively affecting their livelihoods, forcing women and girls to walk long distances to fetch water.

Maliko praised Iris Africa for the provision of water but noted that it was not sufficient for the population at the site.

She also pointed out the lack of bathrooms, which made bathing a challenge.

Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, Gladys Ganda, acknowledged the challenges and urged the flood victims to remain calm.

She expressed optimism that water and sanitation would be addressed in due course.

The lawmaker also called on the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) to release more maize to the people.

Meanwhile, the Legislature has distributed 1,647 bags of maize to 14,947 flood survivors in some centres in Nsanje Lalanje.
