Former President Joyce Banda Calls for Reconstruction in Cyclone-Hit Areas

NSANJE, MALAWI - Former President Joyce Banda has urged the government to prioritize the reconstruction of infrastructure in areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in the country, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

Banda made the revelation on Monday at Nyamadzere Primary School, where she distributed assorted food and non-food items in Nsanje, one of the hardest-hit areas.

"Last night I was in my home area, where it is still raining and houses are still falling down," she said, expressing concern about the ongoing impact of the cyclone.

Banda, who was recently appointed as a goodwill ambassador for the mobilization of resources for Cyclone Freddy, appealed to the communities to consider winter farming as a way to mitigate the impact of the cyclone.

She emphasized that by December 2023, the affected people could potentially harvest their crops and become more self-sustainable.

"There is a need for food and non-food items for the communities affected by the effects of Cyclone Freddy," said the Goodwill Ambassador, highlighting the urgent need for assistance.

In her remarks, Member of Parliament for Nsanje South West, Euritta Ntiza Valeta, expressed gratitude to the former Head of State for her visit to Nsanje, especially to her constituency.

She revealed that approximately 15,000 people have been affected by the cyclone and praised the assistance provided by the Joyce Banda Foundation to the affected people.

"I am grateful for the assistance brought by the Joyce Banda Foundation to the people," she said, acknowledging the support provided by Banda's foundation.

As the affected communities continue to grapple with the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy, Banda's call for reconstruction and support for the affected people has gained attention.

The government and other stakeholders are expected to take heed of her appeal and work towards rebuilding the affected areas and providing essential aid to the communities in need.
