Information Minister Calls for Professional Management of Radio Stations to Promote Peace

Malawi- In commemoration of World Radio Day, Information and Digitisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu has called on Malawi to ensure that radio stations are managed professionally and take on the responsibility of building a peaceful nation, writes Elita Nkalo.

Speaking at Yoneco offices in Zomba, Kunkuyu emphasized the power and influence of radio stations in shaping public opinion, promoting sound decision-making, and preventing conflicts.

"Radio stations, especially community radios, have the responsibility and power to build peaceful communities and a peaceful nation," Kunkuyu said.

He challenged development partners, regulators, broadcasters, listeners, and all concerned stakeholders to engage extensively to ensure that radio stations survive economically and provide rich content that unites and builds a peaceful and prosperous Malawi.

Kunkuyu also praised community radio stations for providing their audiences with relevant content often overlooked by national commercial radio stations.

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) board member, Henry Saindi, stressed the importance of radios in neutralizing myths and misconceptions and enabling people of different literacy levels to understand and articulate issues.

"The role of radios cannot be overemphasized," Saindi said.

"It's a powerful tool that can promote peace and unity in our communities."

At present, Malawi has over 80 radio stations.
