Journalists in Malawi Celebrate 30th World Press Freedom Day with Theme of Free Expression

LILONGWE, Malawi — Journalists in Malawi are today commemorating the 30th World Press Freedom Day under the theme "Free Expression as a Driver for All Other Rights," writes Tionge Hara.

Scores of journalists from all regions of the country have gathered in the capital city of Lilongwe to celebrate the occasion.

The day's events began with a freedom march from Gateway Mall to Mtolankhani House, where a panel discussion on press freedom is currently taking place.

The discussion will cover topics such as media adversity, pluralism, self-sufficiency, and independence.

The incoming chairperson for the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in Malawi, Golden Matonga, was the first speaker at the panel discussion.

Matonga thanked the entire team and urged all journalists to promote media diversity, pluralism, self-sufficiency, and independence.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3rd and is a day set aside to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and the role of journalists in promoting democracy and good governance.

This year's theme emphasizes the importance of free expression as a fundamental right that enables the exercise of all other human rights.
