Karonga, Malawi - The Karonga Debate Club (KADEC) is actively promoting artistic work and encouraging artists to register with the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA), according to statements made during a gospel show competition held in Karonga district, writes Wezzie Mwangonde.
The event showcased the talents of choirs from various churches, and participants were urged to recognize the benefits of registering their work with COSOMA.
Denis Kumwenda, the project officer for promoting the copyright industry in the district, spoke about the importance of artist registration during the competition.
"We are impressed with the gospel show competition because many choirs turned up, and the message about COSOMA has been sent to the people who came," said Kumwenda.
He further explained that the project's objective is to engage different artists and emphasize the significance of registering their creative work.
Ethel Mulenga, a representative of the Ebenezer Choir from the Pentecostal Assemblies of Malawi, expressed gratitude for the competition and the opportunity it provided.
"The competition was very helpful because the prize we received for being in the first position will help improve our choir. We have plans to launch a DVD," Mulenga explained.
The Ebenezer Choir received a prize of one hundred thousand kwacha for their first-place performance.
The Bwiba CCAP Church Choir secured the second position in the competition and was awarded sixty thousand kwacha, while the Grace Trumpeters Choir claimed the third position and received thirty thousand kwacha.
Through funding from COSOMA, KADEC is implementing a four-month project titled "Promoting the Copyright Industry in Karonga District."
The project aims to create awareness among artists about the importance of registering their creative works and the potential benefits it offers.
By encouraging artists to register with COSOMA, KADEC seeks to foster an environment where artists can protect their intellectual property and receive the recognition and support they deserve.
The initiative aims to promote the growth and development of the artistic community in Karonga, enabling artists to thrive and contribute to the cultural landscape of the region.
