"Keep Limbe Clean" Initiative Launched by Blantyre City Council and Stakeholders

BLANTYRE, Malawi - A cleaning initiative called "Keep Limbe Clean" was launched on Thursday by Blantyre City Council and a number of stakeholders to promote hygiene in the city of Blantyre, especially in marketplaces and streets, writes Happy Valirani.

Stakeholders including Limbe Police, the Vendors Association of Malawi, the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM), Asian Muslim Relief Aid, Waste Advisers, and others took part in the launching exercise.

Before the launch, vendors, Limbe Police officers, and staff members from Blantyre City Council conducted a sweeping exercise in the streets of Limbe and Limbe Market.

Gerald Lipikwe, Councilor for the Limbe Central Ward, expressed his happiness with the initiative and the support it has received from different stakeholders.

"We have put some measures in place to ensure we sustain this because we don't want this just to be a one-time thing. We have a task force that is sharing all the proceedings, and they are working tirelessly. We are very glad that things will be okay. We are trying to make this thing an ongoing thing and urging other companies who are in Limbe to join us in our next exercise," said Councilor Lipikwe.

Alfred Ching'anga, Chairperson of the Vendors Association of Malawi, thanked the council for the launch of the initiative and pledged to continue working with the council to maintain cleanliness in the Limbe market.

The event was attended by officials from Blantyre City Council, the Councilor for Limbe Central Ward, Lipikwe, the Officer-in-Charge for the Limbe Police, Gladson Chipumphula, the Chairperson of the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM), Chairperson of the Vendors Association of Malawi, Alfred Ching'anga, among others.

The "Keep Limbe Clean" initiative is a step towards promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Blantyre, and it is hoped that more stakeholders will join in to support the initiative.
