LAWYER STILL STUDYING RULING

Lawyer representing the Speaker says is still studying the ruling by Lilongwe High Court that faulted the way National Assembly filled the position of the Leader of Opposition.

Senior Deputy Chief State Advocate, Dr. Zolomphi Nkowani, said this in an interview with ZBS on Monday.

He said he was still within the thirty days which were stipulated by the courts to make an appeal.

Last Friday, Lilongwe High Court Judge Justice Rezine Mzikamanda ordered Parliament to revert to the original Standing Order governing the election of the Leader of Opposition.

Among other things, Justice Mzikanda ordered MCP to elect and submit a new name for the position of Leader of Opposition to the Speaker within fourteen days.

And MCP members of parliament held a one-day caucus in Lilongwe on Sunday, where they elected Mr. John Tembo as the party’s candidate for the position of Leader of Opposition.

Quizzed on whether the Speaker will appeal against the ruling or not, lawyer representing the Speaker, Dr. Zolomphi Nkowani had this to say.

The Senior Deputy Chief Advocate told ZBS that he has no problem with the election of Mr. Tembo as MCP’s candidate for the Leader of Opposition as long as they are following the right procedures.
