Lilongwe City Council in need of waste collection vehicles
Lilongwe City Mayor, Richard Banda said Lilongwe City Council (LCC) is in need of 20 waste collection vehicles in order for it to effectively manage waste in Lilongwe city.
MALAWI: Lilongwe City Mayor, Richard Banda said Lilongwe City Council (LCC) is in need of 20 waste collection vehicles in order for it to effectively manage waste in Lilongwe city.
He made the remarks on Tuesday at Civic Offices in Lilongwe when Pakistan Welfare Association donated a waste collection vehicle worth K10 million to LCC to help in managing waste in the city of Lilongwe.
Banda said that LCC struggles to do its waste collection operations due to inadequate waste collection vehicles hence he hailed Pakistan Welfare Association for its donation.
“Currently we have four waste collection vehicles and because of the shortage of vehicles, we fail to collect the garbage in all areas in the city as we need about 20 vehicles in order to accommodate all the areas.
“Therefore as city council, we are extremely grateful for the donation by Pakistan Welfare Association; the donation will go a long way in as far as waste management is concerned in Lilongwe city,” Banda said.
He added that LCC is striving to have the required garbage collection trucks; however, he called upon other well-wishers to as well support the city council with the vehicles, if waste management has to improve in the city of Lilongwe.
“We are striving to have the required waste collection trucks, our friends from the Japanese Embassy have also promised to give us some trucks and we are hoping that by the end of this year we will have all the required trucks.
“However we are urging other well-wishers including individuals and organizations to help us with the vehicles that will help to improve waste management in the city,” he said.
In his remarks, Pakistan welfare Association Chairperson, Aamir Younus Patel said that as an association they decided to donate the waste collection vehicle to LCC as one way of fulfilling their corporate social responsibility.
“As an association, we have an opportunity to take part in the development of the country by pursuing various social activities in various sectors of Malawi including in the health and education sector.
“This time as one way of fulfilling our corporate social responsibility we managed to donate the waste collection vehicle and we did the donation together with one of our partners, Sana Mega Stores,” Patel said.
He also said that they are looking forward to doing more charity work in the country saying that government alone cannot manage to do everything.
