LILONGWE, Malawi - Lilongwe Golf Club has announced plans to host a fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, April 22, 2023, to support survivors of Cyclone Freddy, writes Moses Nyirenda.
The announcement was made by Lilongwe Golf Club Vice Captain, Maziko Kumbani, during a press briefing held on Saturday in Lilongwe.
Kumbani explained that the decision to organize the fundraising golf tournament was made by the Lilongwe Golf Club board after recognizing the urgent need to support the survivors of Cyclone Freddy, which caused tragic devastation. He acknowledged that while most of the club members did not physically witness the impact of the cyclone, reports from the media confirmed the severity of the situation, and the club felt compelled to help.
“Even though most of us did not physically go there to experience or see what happened, from the media we confirmed that the experience of the cyclone was quite tragic and we needed to come in and provide support,” Kumbani said.
He called upon not only golfers but also corporate individuals and well-wishers to join the fundraising golf tournament and assist Lilongwe Golf Club in raising funds for Cyclone Freddy survivors.
“Our appeal to the public is that they should come in and help us, it is not only golfers who we are asking to come and help us. Yes, the golfers will be on the golf course playing, but then we know we have corporate individuals out there who are always willing to help, we, therefore, ask them to come and support us at this point in time,” Kumbani emphasized.
He also mentioned that well-wishers can provide support in various forms, such as cash, clothing, and food items, among others.
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) spokesperson, Chipiliro Khamula, commended Lilongwe Golf Club for organizing the fundraising golf tournament for cyclone Freddy survivors, stating that the gesture has come at the right time.
The fundraising golf tournament is set to take place on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Lilongwe Golf Club, and Lilongwe Golf Club is calling on the public to join them in supporting the survivors of Cyclone Freddy.
