Lions Club International to build modern kitchen at Chitipa Prison

Malawi: The Lions Club International is planning to build a modern kitchen at Chitipa Prison, according to Lion Jack Kammayani, district governor for district 412B, which includes Mozambique and Malawi.

Lion Kammayani made the revelation over the weekend when the Lions Club visited the institution to cheer on the athletes and make a donation.

He stated that while at the prison, they were concerned about the poor condition of the kitchen.

Apart from that, he said that they discovered that the prison used firewood to prepare food for a large number of inmates on a daily basis, which he claims had caused a lot of harm to nature because trees are being cut down to provide firewood.

Concurrently, Inspector Arnold Chavinda, General Duties Officer at Chitipa Prison, admitted that the institution uses a lot of firewood every day, adding to the long distance that they travel to gather firewood at Kayerekera.

He said that the modern kitchen will not only help reduce transportation costs but also save trees around Kayerekera.

Inspector Chavinda went on to thank Lions Club International for the supplies, specifically soap and relish, which he said were the most needed at the prison.

When asked why the Lions Club visited Chitipa Prison, Lion Senior Chief Mwaulambia stated that the Lions Club regards inmates as equals and that they wanted to cheer them up and share what little they had with them.

He stated that, in addition to building a modern kitchen, the Lions Club will donate three plasma televisions to the institution this week.

He said that these will be a great source of information for them because they will be able to keep up with what is going on in their country and beyond.
