LUANAR Animal Science Students on Educational Visit to Northern Region Farms
Second year Animal Science students from LUANAR are on an educational visit to farms in the Northern Region as part of their practical lessons, writes Victor Musongole.
Mzuzu, Malawi-As part of their practical lessons, second-year Animal Science students from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources have embarked on an educational visit to farms in the Northern Region, writes Victor Musongole.
The students visited Nyaluwanga, Yawezi, and Patapotea farms last Friday and Saturday in Mzuzu.
The visit was an eye-opener for many students, providing them with practical knowledge and exposing them to different farming practices.
Priscilla Khuleya, one of the students, found the visit profoundly motivating and believes it has shown her that youth can also make significant strides in agriculture.
"I have been motivated by the owner of Yawezi Farms, who is only 22 years old but has done a lot. This trip has been helpful, and now I believe I can also make it big in Agriculture," said Priscilla Khuleya in an interview with AfricaBrief.
According to Patapotea Farm Managing Director Dickson Mzumala, young people should consider self-employment in agriculture, and he advised farmers not to give up but to keep learning.
Professor in Animal Breeding and Dean for Postgraduate Studies Timothy Gondwe believes that the farm visits have given the students practical knowledge, inspired them, and will potentially motivate them to start their own farms.
"We have visited several farms here in the North, which helped students understand what they are learning in class. I believe some have been motivated to venture into farming," said Prof. Gondwe.
The students are expected to conclude their northern visit at Lusangazi on Sunday, further giving them hands-on and practical experience related to their Animal Science course.
