LUANAR Professor shines at the Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication 2021 Symposium

Professor James Bokosi from Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) was being recognised at the recent Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication (ABBC) 2021 Symposium for his significant contribution to scientific knowledge in general and specifically on Biotechnology (Bt) cotton.

His recognition falls under the African scientists/researchers who have made significant efforts towards the delivery and promotion of biotechnology products in Malawi including research and Communication.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Bokosi thanked National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) for facilitating the Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication (ABBC) symposium and its efforts in advancing agricultural technologies including biotechnology.

“I am particularly indebted for the honor and recognition for my humble contribution to the scientific knowledge in general and Bt cotton in particular. I believe the award of a certificate entails the recognition of efforts and hard work of LUANAR in general and Bunda College biotechnology team, in breaking the superficial boundaries and resistance to the introduction of GM crops in Malawi,” said Professor Bokosi.

He said he believed that the award will stimulate the young scientists involved in biotechnology research and development to double their effort in advancing technology that has the potential to contribute significantly to Malawi's socio-economic development.

LUANAR Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kaunda commended Professor Bokosi for putting LUANAR on the map in the area of Science, Technology, and Innovation saying this is contributing to the LUANAR for More Impact (L4MI) 100 days campaign which he is championing since first September.

“I am very happy for Professor James Bokosi and do wholeheartedly congratulate him on this recognition. I will implore on possibilities that he gets recognized nationally and at LUANAR,” said Professor Kaunda.

He said the award was an important development for LUANAR saying it shows that there are many untold impact stories which LUANAR must celebrate saying this will provide an incentive to the University’s staff to do more.

“I am proud that LUANAR is rich in terms of human resources which can transform this country. This gives me an idea that in rolling out L4MI, we will have to take an inventory of the University successes, celebrate them, and forge ahead,” he said.

The ABBC is a platform for biosciences stakeholders to actively exchange experiences and best practices towards improving bioscience communications.

The symposium which provides an African-based and African-led platform plays a fundamental role in addressing pressing communication issues needed to propel biosciences innovations in Africa.
