LWB officials applaud LiSCaP project

Malawi: The Lilongwe Water Board's Strengthening the Capacity of Non-Revenue Water Reduction (LiSCaP) project is assisting the board in reducing water losses, according to officials.

LWB Chief Executive Officer Silli Mbewe announced on Wednesday, August 24th, during the project's 7th Joint Coordination Committee Meeting in Lilongwe, that the project has achieved positive results in the pilot area.

"Through the project, the Board has managed to reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW) within the pilot area by nearly half, and it is facilitating the transfer of technical knowledge from JICA experts to LWB teams,” he stated

Mbewe then praised JICA's financial and technical assistance in the project's implementation.

Kazuhiro Tambara, the chief representative of Jica Malawi, stated that his organisation is committed to assisting Malawi in various development activities.

"Through the project, we are providing equipment, materials, and technical expertise to assist LWB in resolving its NRW problem, which has been the Board's most difficult challenge over the years," he said.

According to Joseph Magwira, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, the project will be implemented in 2024 and will benefit the nation's social and economic development.

"The LiSCaP project is working to reduce the impact of the pandemic by reducing Non-Revenue Water so that all returns from produced water are utilised,” he stated

As of August 24, 2021, LWB's annual NRW is expected to be 32%.

LiSCaP is a pilot project funded by the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) that is being implemented in the southern zone of LWB's supply area.
