Mai Halima Secondary School Promotes Girl Education, Reduces Child Marriages
The presentation of awards is aimed at promoting education and reducing child marriages in the area.
Malawi: Leader of opposition in Parliament and Mulanje central legislator Kondwani Nankhumwa has hailed Mai Halima Secondary School for its efforts in promoting girl education and reducing child marriages in the constituency, writes Judgement Katika.
At the school's awards ceremony, Nankhumwa said, "I express my deepest pride for the school's top performance in the district, which motivates many girls to get an education."
He added, "I encourage all Malawians to protect the girl child and ensure that girls receive the best education for their future and the development of the country."
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Aisha Mambo emphasized the importance of quality education for girls, saying, "Being a deputy speaker, I am living as a role model for the girl child and urging them to work hard in class."
She added, "I advise the girls at the school and across the country to avoid indulging in immoral behaviours that could jeopardize their future potential."
The awards ceremony, introduced by Mai Halima Secondary School to recognize outstanding students and staff, was attended by prominent figures,, including Senior Chief Chikumbu and Mulanje west legislature Yusufu Nthenda.
According to a Human Rights Watch report, on average, one in two girls are married by the age of 18 and half of women aged 20 to 24 are married before reaching the age of 18.
