Malawi-The First Deputy Speaker of Malawi's Parliament, Madalitso Kazombo, has pledged the government's commitment to empowering women and youths to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country, writes Alinafe Nyanda.

Speaking on Sunday at a developmental rally organized by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Salima, Kazombo said the government is dedicated to promoting and upholding the rights of women and youths in leadership.

Kazombo emphasized the importance of women and youth as key stakeholders in nation-building and decision-making.

He called on government institutions such as the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO), the Parachute Battalion, and the Mtakataka Police Training School to help create job opportunities for women and youths in the district.

"Women and youth in leadership are key decision makers that can help contribute to the development of the country, and I believe it's high time the availability of government institutions helps women and youth in the district find job opportunities and live a better life," said Kazombo.

The First Deputy Speaker added that the government will ensure economic empowerment for vulnerable young people and women through the development of technical and commercial skills and the promotion of business creation.

The rally, which was organized to inform the community on the 2023–24 national budget plan, was graced by MCP Secretary-General Eisenhower Mkaka, Minister of Lands Deus Gumba, Members of Parliament, and traditional leaders.

Member of Parliament for Salima Central Constituency, Gerald Kapiseni Phiri, described the rally as a first step closer to different opportunities for people in his constituency.

"Today was a great day because I saw government officials coming to grace the occasion today, as we were unpacking some of the key projects that have been accomplished by me as a legislator, but also people were able to appreciate what President Lazarus Chakwera is doing as the leader of this country," said Kapiseni Phiri.
