Malawi Parliament Trains Journalists on Parliamentary Reporting

Malawi: The Malawi parliament has trained journalists from the country's various media outlets in parliamentary and legislative reporting, writes Alinafe Nyanda.

The two-day training, held in Lilongwe, targeted scribes with the aim of improving their writing skills and reporting concerning parliament.

During the opening ceremony on Saturday, Mr Jeffrey Mwenyeheli, the deputy clerk of parliament responsible for parliamentary services, said empowering journalists with parliament terms, committee systems, procedures, and practices remains key to improving their reporting skills.

"This will assist them in understanding additional skills and knowledge that provide the standards that are especially applicable in parliamentary and legislative reporting," he said.

Chair of the Press Gallery, Catherine Maulidi, commended the Malawi parliament for supporting the timely training, saying it will greatly assist journalists in writing better articles on parliamentary proceedings.

Democracy International's Chief of Party for the Parliamentary Support Program, Mr Hristijan Gjorgievski, expressed confidence that the training would ensure effective reporting on Parliament in the best interests of the public.

The two-day training was organized with support from USAID and Democracy International.
