Malawi police arrest foreign nationals for law-breaking

MALAWI: Following a tip-off from the society, Lilongwe police have arrested a 22-year-old man of Nigerian origin, Chigozie Framulyne Ifeamy Chukwu, in Lilongwe for allegedly being found in possession of dangerous drugs suspected to be cocaine and Cannabis Sativa.

The arrest happened on Thursday at Lilongwe City Mall when the suspect, whose passport number is A07015608, was found with seven blisters of the suspected drug.

Confirming the development to AfricaBrief, Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Police, Inspector Hastings Chigalu, said when the tip-off reached officers manning City Mall Police Unit, the same was relayed to Lilongwe Police Station's drug detectives who made a follow-up that led to the arrest of Chukwu and seizure of the illicit drug.

“We also took him to his house in area 49 Gulliver, where we also managed to the loose cannabis Sativa in his bedroom. He will soon appear in court to answer the case of being found in possession of dangerous drugs which contravenes Section 4 as read with Regulation 19 of Dangerous Drugs Act,” said Inspector Chigalu.

Meanwhile, the illicit drug has been sent to Pharmacy Medicines and Regulatory Authority for analysis.

On the same day, Dowa Police in Dowa also arrested five Democratic Republic of Congo (D. R. C) nationals, two Malawians and 1 Nigerian, whose names are been withheld but residing at Dzaleka camp over suspects that on 4th December, the eight broke into Umodzi Katubza Primary School, in Dowa and went away with 98 Lenovo tablets, a laptop, and other accessories, all worth K17, 695, 000.

According to Dowa Police Public Relations Officer, Gladson M'bumpha, following the incident, police conducted investigations which led to the arrest of the eight, the recovery of 26 tablets and a laptop.

The suspects will answer charges leveled against them.
