Malawi President enlists former heads of state to provide relief to cyclone-affected communities

Malawi-Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has enlisted the help of former heads of state in his efforts to provide relief to people affected by Cyclone Freddy, which hit the southern region of the country in early March, writes Winston Mwale.

During his second stint in the region to assess the damage caused by the cyclone, President Chakwera met with former presidents Dr Bakili Muluzi and Dr Joyce Banda.

He sought their input and expertise to help find short- and long-term solutions to assist the displaced people and rebuild the affected communities in a more resilient way.

According to President Chakwera, Dr Muluzi and Dr Banda offered valuable insights on how to best provide immediate relief to the affected people and rebuild their communities to withstand future climate-induced disasters.

In a statement, President Chakwera expressed his gratitude for the support of the two former heads of state.

"I am humbled to receive such support from the two statespersons," he said.

The former presidents pledged their support for all efforts by the government to provide necessary respite to affected communities.

Their support is in line with the Operation Tigwirane Manja initiative, which seeks to encourage Malawians to work together to find solutions to the country's problems.
