Malawi remembers 20 July 2011 anti-government demonstrations victims

Malawi: It has been exactly 11 years since 20 people were killed by police in Mzuzu during national anti-government protests.

As is customary, a memorial service for the deceased was held this morning at Mzuzu's Zolozolo cemetery.

The theme for this year was "Celebrating with friends who died on July 20, 2011."

The victims were shot by law enforcement officers while protesting the late Prof Bingu wa Mutharika's regime's social and economic ills.

Mercy Mfune, who speaks on behalf of those who have lost relatives, stated that they are still waiting for the Tonse government's promise made in 2020 that they will conduct additional investigations into their relatives' deaths.

The guest of honour at the memorial service is Khumbo Kachale, the former president's vice president, as well as other invited guests from various Churches.

The principal secretary in the Ministry of National Unity; Moses Mkandawire, the Chief Executive Director for Church and Society; and almost all party representatives in the Tonse administration were also present.
