Malawi Responds to US Statement on Graft: Government Committed to Fighting Against Corruption-Kunkuyu

Malawi: The Malawi government has responded to a recent statement by the U.S. Embassy expressing concern about the status of the country's efforts to combat corruption.

The U.S. Embassy's statement on corruption in the country, and subsequent media interviews by the U.S. Ambassador sparked a response from the Malawi government, which emphasizes its “commitment” to the fight against corruption.

According to a statement issued Wednesday by Moses Kunkuyu, the Minister of Information and Digitalization, the government will engage with the U.S. Embassy through diplomatic channels in a spirit of mutual respect

Kunkuyu says: "The Malawi Government maintains its resolve to continue its unwavering support of the Anti-Corruption Bureau as an institution by making it more functionally independent and more resourced than it has ever been, with the expectation that this will result in the successful and speedy completion of all the cases the Bureau is handling."

The statement says the government reiterates its full commitment to the fight against corruption and to the strengthening of governance institutions such as law enforcement agencies, public prosecutors, and the courts.

Kunkuyu, in the statement, says the government believes that these institutions each have a critical role in the fight against corruption and will continue to support them in their efforts.
