Malawi urged to declare Shepherd Bushiri, Moses Mkandawire, and Stanley Onjezani Kenani as National Treasures

Malawi-The Federalism Institute in Malawi has called on the government and reputable organizations to consider nominating Shepherd Bushiri, Moses Mkandawire, and Stanley Onjezani Kenani as national treasures of Malawi, writes Winston Mwale. 

In a statement released on March 23 and signed by Lusungu B. Simba Mwakhwawa, the leader of the institute, and Ms. Rehema Patricks, the national spokesperson, the trio was described as true icons of the country whose contributions to humanity, society, culture, and social justice have been immeasurable.

They highlighted Bushiri's contributions to society and the well-being of others, Moses' legacy as a champion of justice, human rights, and democracy, and Onjezani's significant contributions to alleviating poverty and improving the lives of those in need.

The activists said that declaring the individuals as national treasures would ensure that their contributions are properly preserved and protected and that their legacies of patriotism are recognized and celebrated.

They also noted that the designation of national treasures is a way of promoting national unity and identity.

While acknowledging that the process for declaring a national treasure in a unitary system can be complex, the activists urged the relevant government officials and organizations to consider their request and take the necessary steps to declare the three individuals as national treasures of Malawi.

The activists cited examples of individuals who have been declared national treasures in their respective countries, such as Nelson Mandela in South Africa and Mahatma Gandhi in India, and emphasized the importance of honouring those who have made significant contributions to their respective fields.

It remains to be seen whether the Malawi government will take up the activists' request and declare the three individuals as national treasures.
