Malawi-Students and teachers from Malawi's Central East Education Division (CEED) have donated assorted items and cash to assist survivors of Cyclone Freddy in the country's southern region, writes Andrew Magombo, MANA.
During a symbolic handover ceremony held at Capital Hill on Wednesday, CEED Education Division Manager Billy Banda noted that the disaster had disrupted the routines of Malawians, prompting the need for support.
"This is a time to show compassion and unity as Malawians," he said. "Let’s make it a priority to render support and it is not about having everything but rather a giving heart with the little we have."
CEED donated cash worth K1.4 million, plastic buckets, second-hand clothes, and bags of maize, and rice to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), which will deliver the aid to the affected survivors.
As of March 21st, the death toll from Cyclone Freddy is 507, with 1332 injuries and 537 individuals still missing.
"We thank CEED for this generosity," said Under Secretary for DODMA Christopher Helbert.
"Cyclone Freddy has heavily affected us so bad that more assistance is needed, and we will deliver it to the severely affected survivors."
Salima Secondary School Head Prefect Auswin Chitongo encouraged fellow students and teachers to follow CEED's lead and help Cyclone Freddy survivors.
Ministry of Education Director of Administration Steven Chikopa concurred with Banda, stating that the dire situation required additional assistance to meet the enormous demand for food and relief items in camps.
