Mayor for Zomba city has urged the communities to take responsibility for monitoring the developmental activities in their areas.
Benson Bulla said this during the handover ceremony of the evacuation center to contractors at Chambo ward in the district.
The mayor commended Oxfam for coming to assist the city with the funding to construct the evacuation center, saying the centers will go a long way to support the residents once floods and other related disasters occur in Zomba and other surrounding areas.
Bulla said, “The project will help to reduce problems people in the area encounter during disasters, as back then we used churches and schools to keep the affected families in, a situation that leads students to venture into harmful practices.”
The councilor for the Chambo ward Eddah Nkulla said the project will help to assist residents affected by floods and urged citizens to take the responsibility of protecting developmental activities that are taking place in the area.
“I call upon the contractors to work as professionals and finish the project at the specific period of 6 months that has been given,” said Nkulla.
