MCTU faults Malawi Airlines on amended Labour Relations Act in on-going industrial strike staged by its staff members
Workers at Malawi Airlines have been observing a sit-in, demanding a 100% salary increment, citing high living costs in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, writes Grace Chunga.
MALAWI: Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) says Malawi Airlines has rushed in using the just amended Labour Relations Act in the on-going industrial strike staged by its staff members in Malawi.
MCU president Charles Kumchenga said that Malawi Airlines management could have waited for stakeholders to finalize discussions on president Lazarus Chakwera’s decision to assent to the act that many expressed reservations with.
Workers at Malawi Airlines have been observing a sit-in, demanding a 100% salary increment, citing high living costs in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kumchenga said, “Just like some quarters of the society feared that the just amended labor relations act will be abused by employers, MCTU is expressing disappointment with the management of Malawi Airlines for using the act at a time that discussions are underway, to possibly suspend the just amended labor relations act.”
