Minister of Homeland Security calls for collaboration in providing safe homes for streets connected children

Malawi-Minister of Homeland Security, Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma, has called upon non-state actors and human rights bodies to join forces with the government in providing safe homes for street-connected children in the country, writes Chrispine Lwanja.

Ng'oma's remarks follow reports of street-connected children allegedly attacking people in the city of Blantyre, which he says violates other people's rights and hampers the country's security.

"It is unfortunate that once these street kids get swept off the streets, at some point, they come back to the streets," Ng'oma said in an interview on Thursday in Lilongwe.

He added that his ministry will work together with the Ministry of Gender in dealing with the matter.

"We do not have much space to keep the minors in the country, so if these street kids bring havoc and disturb people's rights, we will have no choice but put them in a cell, so there is a need for human rights bodies to join hands with the government in providing better homes for these streets connected children," Ng'oma said.

The Minister further called upon non-state actors and human rights bodies to collaborate with the government in flashing out street kids from the cities and providing them with a conducive environment where they can live.

Ng'oma reiterated that his ministry is working hard to ensure tight security in the country.
