Minister of Homeland Security Donates Cow and K500,000 to Cyclone Freddy Survivors in Blantyre
Minister of Homeland Security Ng'oma donates cow, K500,000 to volunteers aiding tropical cyclone Freddy survivors in Blantyre, writes Chrispine Lwanja.
BLANTYRE, Malawi - Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma, courtesy of Apostle Clifford Kawinga of CK Cold Storage, has donated a cow, and K500,000 to volunteers who have been assisting survivors of tropical cyclone Freddy at the Naotcha evacuation camp in Blantyre, writes Chrispine Lwanja.
This donation comes as the Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors are expected to move out of the camp tomorrow.
Speaking at Naotcha camp on Sunday, Ng'oma stated that this donation is a response to the Tigwirane Manja campaign recently launched by State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, aimed at assisting cyclone Freddy survivors.
Ng'oma acknowledged that there are volunteers who have provided significant support to the cyclone survivors but have not been recognized.
"Volunteers have done a great job in supporting Cyclone Freddy survivors, so I have decided to mobilize resources with the help of Apostle Kawinga to recognize them," he said.
The minister further advised people living in disaster-prone areas to relocate to safer places and be given opportunities to access loans.
"These people have lost their properties, so it is important that the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) provide loans to help them start businesses," Ng'oma added.
GVH Chilobwe received the donation on behalf of Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors. He thanked Ng'oma for the gesture, saying it will go a long way in supporting the people as they are expected to move out of the camp in due course.
"The monetary support given to these people will enable them to have a start pack as they move out of the camp anytime soon," Chilobwe said.
Ng'oma had previously donated his salary and assorted food items to the Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors at the same camp.
