Malawi - Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma has fulfilled his pledge to donate his salary for the month of March to the gravediggers who helped bury 28 people who died in Cyclone Freddy in Chilobwe, writes Chrispine Lwanja.
Ng'oma made a K1.5 million donation at Naotcha Primary School camp in Blantyre on Saturday.
He also donated picks, hoes, and shovels worth K200,000 to help remove dead bodies that were buried in the mud.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ng'oma expressed his appreciation for the great job the grave-diggers did and pledged to source out assorted items to support cyclone survivors.
"These people did a commendable job, unfortunately, they are not being recognized, so I thought of thanking them," he said.
Group Village Head Chilobwe, who received the donation, thanked Ng'oma for his gesture, saying it would motivate the gravediggers and others who worked hard to ensure that the deceased were buried with dignity.
The state president, Lazarus Chakwera, through the "Tigwirane Manja" campaign, is keen to ensure that everyone takes part in supporting survivors of Cyclone Freddy.
