Minister of Homeland Security Urges NGOs, Well-Wishers to Aid Cyclone Victims

Malawi-Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma, the Minister of Homeland Security, has appealed to non-governmental organizations and well-wishers to collaborate with the government in supporting individuals affected by tropical cyclone Freddy, writes Chrispine Lwanja.

Ng'oma made the call on Tuesday during his visit to some of the areas hit by the cyclone in Blantyre, the commercial city.

Ng'oma acknowledged that the government could not handle the effects of the cyclone on its own, stressing the need for NGOs and well-wishers to step in.

He praised some organizations that had already begun assisting those affected by the calamity.

Ng'oma visited Chilobwe and Soche, the affected areas, and Manja and Naotcha primary school camps, where he led the cyclone Freddy victims in prayers and provided them with monetary support.

"This is a serious problem, and I am requesting organizations and well-wishers to help because the government alone cannot manage. It is a sad situation; I have witnessed the removal of people who were buried with mud," lamented Ng'oma.

The minister pledged to construct tents in designated areas to shelter the affected people.

Additionally, Ng'oma, who chairs the cabinet committee on infrastructure development, stated that there was a need to rethink and enhance the country's infrastructure.

Reports indicate that 190 people have died due to tropical cyclone Freddy.
